ARTWORK:
ravenous desire to consume. The upright wing of the butterfly reflects his last remorseful moment. The final drama is played out before the sympathetic
viewer. Entwined among the beard-like hanging threads of the tree, tiny silver
ants support themselves through what the artists call the "force of expansion."
No adhesives were used to accomplish this unique artistic result. Beneath the tree, atop the ten thousand year rock, ants attack the young, terrified, doomed mantises which have innocent life-like expressions. The ants are shaped with very fine wire. On the mantises' and the ants' leg joints, the viewer can detect, with a magnifying glass, fine hairs of silver wire. A mysterious green patina as well as the expanding tree roots hiding beneath a low hanging cloud add a mythical aspect to the piece. The creative demands of an artwork such as this are heavy, but the result is sweet and rewarding.
